The one thing pilots cannot leave without before flying is not booze, but a wristwatch. When all else fails in the cockpit, a fully-functioning watch can mean the difference between landing safely and a permanent vacation. Casio has those high-fliers specifically in mind when they developed the new G-Shock Aviation analog-digital watch. One press of the button at the 9 o’clock position instantly brings up the compass, to give you your bearings instantly. Press the button right below it and the watch reverts to its original configuration. There’s also a literal direction indicator on the upper display plus a direction angle value at the lower part of the watchface. Both are important when your instruments have gone awry. Of course, airplanes are designed to be redundant in terms of instrumentation and safety, so the odds of multiple instrument failures are slim. Still, it’s better if you don’t take any chances and carry a reliable watch like this G-Shock with you. The watch is big and beefy, with a 52mm-wide case made of a combination of resin and stainless steel. The 28mm strap is wide and should hold up to the toughest punishment. Animating the hands is a quartz movement and the mineral crystal face protects the top of the watch. Even if you’re not flying, the watch can still do wonders and take you places, thanks to your imagination. $250.
