HTC One (M8)

Pro photographers will always say that the best camera is the one that you brought along. Nowadays, that’s usually your smartphone. The newest HTC One (M8) could be the best so far. The lovely chassis hides a myriad of features, including an improved photographic system. A nifty feature at the rear of the phone, called the Duo Camera, lets you choose focus even after you’ve taken the shot. This is done via the combination of a 4MP Ultrapixel camera plus a depth sensor. Given the relatively small sensor size loaded in smartphones, the depth of field (blurred background with sharp foreground or vise versa) is a bit on the shallow side. But on the HTC One (M8), this is compensated. And there’s another 4MP camera in front in case you’re a fan of selfies. The phone itself is big, with a 5-inch Full HD screen and a sleek aluminum case. There’s a Gorilla Glass 3 covering on the LCD for excellent protection as well. Running the show is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor checking in at 2.3GHz with 2GB of RAM. Choose between a 16GB or 32GB storage space, though you can always expand it through the microSD slot that now takes up to 128GB cards. It’s available for pre-order now, as a Developer or Google Play Edition. $650+.
