The recently-concluded Sochi Winter Olympics saw a lot of firsts. Sports photographers have no doubt tested a lot of brand-new equipment as well. They are usually the first to test prototypes and they can now breathe a sigh of relief because the new Nikon D4S is out in the open. The pros have been sworn to secrecy about new gear and the D4S must be one of the gears they tested in Russia. The flagship camera has been in the shadows for a while now but it’s finally gone public. Aimed for photographers with a serious need for speed, the D4S comes with a 16.2 MP full-frame CMOS sensor that’s amped up to take in even the faintest of available light. ISO sensitivity is now up to 409,600 (Hi-4) which means a whole lot when you’re shooting virtually blind. This amazing processor is coupled with the new Multi-CAM 3500 AF sensor for accurate autofocus and the EXPEED 4 Image Processing Engine. The results are correctly-focused shots even at 11 frames per second. The processing power is also beefed up to let you shoot 200-shot bursts with no worries. Apart from photos, the D4S is also capable of 1920×1080 video up to 60 fps, for those amazing slow-mo shots which you can incorporate in your effects arsenal. Again, this camera is not intended for those who are just starting out in the world of photography. It’s for professionals who need a tough camera that can handle whatever challenges they may face. Or for serious amateurs who stack fat wads of cash because this monster is not cheap. $6,500.
