New Sony Alpha DSLRs: Ready For Takeoff

New Sony Alpha DSLRs: Ready For Takeoff
Accidental or not, the new naming nomenclature of the latest Sony Digital SLRs sound more like airliners than cameras. The A230, A330, and A380 from the Alpha series pack a lot of features for the first-time DSLR shooters or for seasoned pros. Starting the new lineup is the A230 with the 10.2 megapixel sensor and weighs just a hair under 16 ounces so as not to scare the shifters from point-and-shoots. Both the A330 and A380 on the other hand have larger sensors, but every one of these new bodies come with the SteadyShot image stabilization feature. This means that you won’t need to spend a fortune on image-stabilized, hard-to-find Sony lenses. Good news too for SD/SDHC owners, you could use those for the Sony Alpha instead of the proprietary Memory Stick. $550+.

Infrared Flashlight: Love The Night Light

Infrared Flashlight: Love The Night Light
As versatile as the human eye may be, it still hasn’t evolved enough to let us see through complete darkness. You may need to see in the dark for your job or your hobby and this Advanced Flashlight will let technology give you a third night vision eye. The foot-long flashlight looks and functions like your ordinary flashlight, with a 3-watt cool white LED for the main light. Night vision makes this torch different with 17 infrared LEDs which let you record in total darkness. A 128 MB onboard memory lets your record up to 15 seconds of video or 500 still shots. The memory is expandable up to 2 GB courtesy of the micro SD slot should you need longer recording times and more digital stills. Downloading the videos is simplified by the USB connection and the LCD display on the flashlight body indicates the batter life, recorded video time, time, date, and other pertinent data you’ll need when snooping around a darkened room. $400.

Mamiya DL33: Unbridled Clarity

Mamiya DL33: Unbridled Clarity
The great debate in professional photography right now is when enough is enough with regards to the megapixel war. Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, or Sony fanboys can argue all they want about their preferred SLR cameras but they still won’t match the clarity being offered by medium format cameras like this Mamiya DL33. It’s 33 megapixels strong, with a 36×48mm sensor, twice the size of full frame DSLRs. Given the sensor size, the pixels are still 7.2 microns big, allowing for more light to be captured and giving better contrast and dynamic range. The digital back is from Leaf and the 3.5 inch touch screen LCD is the biggest in its class. Go ahead, shoot in 33 megapixels and enlarge all you want, clarity is a guaranteed certainty. Mamiya would also like you to have either a 55mm f/2.8 or 135mm f/3.5 lens for free if you buy the DL33 between April and May. $20,000.

JVC Everio X: All In One Hybrid

JVC Everio X: All In One Hybrid
Good things come in small packages. This is proven in the JVC GZ-X9000 or simply the Everio X. It’s a digital camera and camcorder crammed into a case small enough to fit in your shirt pocket. At 0.66 ounces, it’s light in weight but heavy in features. In camcorder mode, it shoots full HD video with 1000 lines of resolution. Fans of super slow-mo will be glad to know that the Everio can shoot 2.4 seconds of video in 24 seconds, or an equivalent of 10x slow-mo speed. JVC claims that the Everio can beat high-end DSLRs by shooting up to 15 frames per second at 9 megapixels. And another trick up the Everio’s sleeve is the ability to capture full HD video and still images simultaneously. You’ll just have to wait ’til July for the release of this hybrid beast. $1000.
