Vaavud Wind Meter

The science of measuring wind speeds involves a bit more than sticking your index finger up in the air or letting sand drop from your palms. Smartphones loaded with the Vaavud wireless wind meter is a good start for getting exact readings. Developed in Copenhagen, the anemometer hooks up to your iPhone 4, 4S and 5 or the Samsung Galaxy SII or SIII. Two magnets within the rotor develop a magnetic field, which is then detected by your smartphone. Algorithms used for sound processing are instead used to count the rotations that are eventually translated to wind speeds. The project is looking for funding via Kickstarter, and there’s less than a month to complete the pledges. ~$45+.
