The conventional ‘supercar’ thinking is for one to slap on the biggest engine he could find into a tiny car. But there’s another school of thought to that process altogether. Some will suggest that reduction of weight is the way to go. It’s been done before and VW is just upping the ante by fitting the XL1 with an engine from Ducati. That’s right, a powerful engine coming from a well-known brand in the world of motorcycle racing. The VW Ducati XL1 features a Superquadro engine that can pump put 200 horses on a very high rpm range. Power doesn’t sound huge on paper but the car’s weight makes up the difference. The engine is mated to seven-speed DSG gearbox which takes the XL1 from a standstill to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. While it won’t be the same mind-blowing number that most supercars make, it will surely improve over time. $TBD.
